Silicon carbide (SiC) is a high-performance ceramic material made of high-quality, non-oxide powders and can be manufactured to the specific requirements of a wide range of appliions. Due to its excellent tribological properties in coination with low weight, universal chemical resistance and ready availability, SiC is a frequently used engineering ceramic with a highly …
Silicon carbide has garnered great interest as a functional material for use in various optical and semiconductor devices. It has come to be recognized as a desired material for large optical mirror appliions and radiation detectors, due to its high stiffness, high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion [1–3].
Silicon Carbide Properties. The technical properties of silicon carbide are remarkably similar to those of diamond. It is one of the lightest, hardest and strongest technical ceramic materials and has exceptional thermal conductivity, chemical resistance and low thermal expansion. Extremely high hardness. Wear resistant.
Green Silicon Carbide . Green Silicon Carbide offers even higher cutting performance than Black Silicon Carbide. The extremely sharp-edged and pointed material is especially suited to abrasive appliions in which very aggressive material removal is desired.

Silicon carbide is formed in two ways, reaction bonding and sintering. Each forming method greatly affects the end microstructure. Reaction bonded SiC is made by infiltrating compacts made of mixtures of SiC and carbon with liquid silicon. The silicon reacts with the carbon forming more SiC which bonds the initial SiC particles.
Silicon carbide has excellent properties for a wide range of appliions. Components made from silicon carbide are ideal for appliions in which resistance to wear, high rigidity, corrosion resistance and thermal stability are vitally important.
